What does it take to be called a Christian? A few years ago someone asked me what are the exact words they need to say to be saved. I was sad because I knew that this man wanted help but he also just wanted someone to give him the answer.
The honest, yet harsh, answer is that people can’t say a prayer for you in order to be saved. This prayer is something that must come from the depths of your heart and the weakness of your body. I think the Sinner’s Prayer is a great place to start but also keep praying to God to allow your honest words to come out, even if they are just your raw emotions.
That is when the greatness starts in you being born again. When you are fed up of living the way you thought was good that is when your heart is ready to speak. It is great to finally come to the point where you know that no one else can help you, except for God. And that is when you start talking to God like you have never talked to another human being. The walls come down and His love allows you to shed all those hurts, shields, and fakeness.
It simply takes your heart calling out to the Lord for help. Becoming a Christian isn’t just words that you say. It involves the condition of your heart. The way you will feel after you say these words is different for everyone. So there is not a right or a wrong way to feel.
For me after I said the prayer I felt ok. Not overly emotional or anything. However, over time God had begun the heart surgery process that would eventually save my life. He tore away the layers that I had allowed in my life for such a long time. These layers were like scar tissue that had only grown older and harder with time. God had to get rid of that stuff that was holding me back from realizing how beautiful his love really is. When God had all of those obstructions gone that is when I was able to feel his love as if he was next to me, holding my hand. I was still in a dark pit which you can read about in more detail in my Testimony. Then all of a sudden something amazing happened. God, the Creator of all things, met me as my Abba, in the midst of my greatest pain, he comforted me, and then he carried me out of the deepest pit I’ve ever experienced. HE carried me to safety like the lost and injured sheep that I was.
That is my experience with the Lord. We are not saved because we say some words off of a beauty inspired Pinterest pin. We are saved because our hearts are ready to receive the greatest love and redemption ever known to man.
I’d love to know your thoughts on what it really takes to be a Christian. If you feel led to share your testimony post it below or send me an email.
