“And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” -Luke 10:2 (ESV)
“Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.” -Luke 8:11 (ESV)
“Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest.” -John 4:35 (ESV)
I know many of us have read these scriptures about the Harvest but how are we applying them to our lives today? Jesus says that the Harvest is ready!! It’s ready NOW. Not tomorrow, not next week or next year. It’s ready now. We don’t need to wait any longer because its growing season is done and now as God’s children it’s time to get out into the field. The scriptures say it perfectly, “the work is plentiful but the workers are few”. But why is that? With so many people wanting a job why would there be only but a few workers?
These workers who were not standing on solid foundation thought by their previous experience with planting and reaping that what they were planting wouldn’t amount to much as the enemy stepped in to remind them of what they could get for themselves.
How often have we thought this about our own lives? We think what we are doing is not enough and sometimes that causes us to give up and walk away from something really great. Here Jesus points out that the harvest is ready and the people are shocked. God took his seed which was his word, his truth, and planted it. The harvest came around and people’s ideas of what they should be seeing didn’t line up with what they actually saw. What these people saw wasn’t good enough to them.
What is the point of these scriptures? The point is that the Harvest is ready right now, right where you are at. It doesn’t matter if you think you are ready or not. God has called on you to help with the Harvest because there will come a time when Jesus will return and the work of the Harvest will be finished. You have been called on, set apart, chosen, adopted, and loved. The end of the Harvest means it’s time to go to our forever home in Heaven. I, for one, do not want to let another day pass by without working for my Heavenly Father just because I don’t feel like it looks or feels right. The hard part is that if you are waiting for that feeling, it will never come until it’s too late.
As we approach the beginning of 2014 I encourage you to write out some affirmations about your place in the Kingdom of God. You have earned a place with our Heavenly Father when you accepted Him into your life. You have also earned a place as a Harvest worker for our Abba. Life is busy and too often we feel like we haven’t done enough to call that place OURS. It’s ours because The Almighty King, The Prince of Peace, The Protector, and The Savior have chosen us for it.
You may feel like you aren’t ready and that is okay because you are in good company. Do you think Jesus’ disciples were ready? Do you think Paul was ready or even Jesus’ Mom, Mary? They weren’t ready but God gave them provision and qualified them for what needed to be done according to HIS will.
