I love reading what other Christians are saying about the Bible. Sometimes its good and sometimes not so good. Either way it is important that we as Christians communicate with one another. Recently there was an articled posted from the Christian music group Gungor that outlines his personal belief on the events of Genesis. He recently stated the following on his blog:
Do I believe God exists? Yes.
Do I believe Jesus is the Son of God? Yes.
Do I believe that Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness? Yes.
Do I believe that God literally drowned every living creature 5,000 years ago in a global flood except the ones who were living in a big boat? No, I don’t.
So he is stating that he believes in God, Jesus, and that scripture is God breathed yet he does not believe that the story of Noah and the Ark is real! That is startling and confusing. I am confused because how can we believe that scripture is God breathed yet question its authenticity?
Gungor says he believes this way because of science and rational thought. While science and rational thought are great reasons to why we as Christians come to the conclusion of any question such as these we must be careful not to pick apart the Bible. The Bible is not sold to Christians as an a la carte menu. It’s a full meal! Jesus is clear when he talked about sin, love, forgiveness, and truth. We cannot choose to be forgiven but not accept the weight of our sin.
If we have accepted Jesus Christ in our life and call ourselves born again we have to accept the whole Bible as the entire truth. It is not just spiritual or religious inspiration. These are words that are “God breathed” from the creator himself:
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”
-2 Timothy 3:16
I am thankful for your recent post about science and rational thought. However, I must point out a few things out of grave concern because we were not created to piecemeal the Bible. God did not create the world and the Bible for his own creation to not accept what is written in its entirety. People have rejected the Bible in the past but as Christians this is not an option. The Bible is riddled with many stories that appear extreme and at times hard to believe such as your disbelief in Noah getting all the animals in the Ark. Your disbelief does not mean that it is not true. God went to great lengths in choosing what man would write and what they would say. As you referenced all word are “God breathed”.
In Paul’s youth it would of seemed impossible that he would not only write a portion of the Bible but also a majority of the New Testament.
It would not appear believable that Moses could of parted the water with a stick or struck the various plagues over Egypt (and was victorious). It would not appear possible that Sarah would of been able to conceive and give birth to a son (as God promised) in her old age. The physical impossibilities of her old body would of made it IMPOSSIBLE. Wouldn’t this all appear as you say…”Crazy”, that these things could happen.
I mean what kind of world do we live in that things like this happen? It seems crazy to think that a supernatural event could happen here on earth as if Heaven was actually here on Earth. Speaking of Heaven on Earth there was JESUS! Here Jesus was conceived, born to a carpenter but destined to be The King, The Messiah, started healing the sick, the lame, the lepers, and redeeming the sinners. And of course we know Jesus just couldn’t stop there he went on and to be crucified on a cross because of this crazy love he has for sinners. Then he died and rose again three days later. That’s pretty crazy!
We cannot dismiss the Bible just because something doesn’t appear possible. When you pray you are asking God for something you can’t do yourself…something crazy and out of your realm of authority or possibility.
It would also appear you are applying science over the word of God as if it has more authority in proving our existence. It’s great you are looking at history of our sciences and what past research has concluded. But, DNA doesn’t appear from no where. Obviously it had to be created because even Scientists have shed doubt on the idea that our universe and everything in it was not randomly created. So if you don’t want to believe that the time of Noah ever existed you have to reject what the word of God says all together. As a Christian and my fellow Brother in Christ I pray that just isn’t true. I pray that you know the whole Bible is the full truth and nothing but the truth. The truth had to of been started by someone and at some point.
I am not writing this open letter to criticize you but instead to encourage you to dig deeper into the word. After all the word of God is to be used for rebuking, correcting, teaching, and guiding. Let us not forget loving our fellow Brothers and Sisters in Christ as we do these things. I pray you continue to use science and reason in your search of truth but allowing God’s word to supersede everything else. If God is our foundation he should also be our compass.
In the word’s of Isaiah 1:18: “Come let us reason together”.
