How do we know that heaven and hell really exist? Maybe a better question is…is hell a real place or just a state of mind? Most of us can agree that we will experience heaven but some people are against the idea that hell is an option for those who do not accept Jesus into their lives.
I am sure we can all agree that there will be an afterlife after our bodies fail us here on earth. But where will you go? It would be great to think that because our lives were so hard here on earth that our afterlife will be easy and full of peace and love. That as soon as we die that there is a warm fuzzy feeling we experience and it’s going to be everything we dreamed of.
But then what happens to our idea of justice?
What if Hitler and every serial killer and rapist had the same opportunity as you to bask in the milk and honey and all the glorious riches that are awaiting us in heaven. Should everyone still be allowed to enjoy what you worked so hard to get because you lived a good life. You lived to be good and kind and tried to help people when you could. Then you see that Hitler standing next to you and receives the same royalty treatment.
How does that make you feel?
Whether you believe in God or not I would imagine that you would not want to share heaven with such “bad” people.
Let’s now take a look at the idea of hell.
Hell was not originally created by God but was a place He created for the ones that refused His help. After all what would be better? You don’t have to listen to God or follow His rules anymore. There is a whole pit of people that are basking in their “own” ways. What bliss, right? All the murderers and rapists and everyone else that rebelled against God’s commands HAVE this wonderful opportunity to go there.
I pose this question of heaven and hell because I hear a lot people talk about how they can go anywhere they want when they die. That is a great illusion to have so much control that you can will yourself into the afterlife in whatever scenario you choose. In fact it is such a great illusion that there is actually a source that provides such thoughts. He is the great magician named Lucifer. He was once an Angel (also part of God’s creation) and he decided that he could will himself into power. Lucifer felt he no longer needed God so he rebelled and God gave him his own special place to live the way he wanted. He has his own rules, his own people, his own kingdom, he has ultimate power in these regions. One of the greatest perks of hell is that God does not have any presence in this place. With no presence there is no chance you will ever have an encounter with God. You won’t have to listen to God in any way.
So if you choose to reject God you have earned a first class ticket to hell.
How do we know that there is a hell?
Why would God allow the first people on earth (Adam and Eve) to be tempted in the Garden of Eden? Why would God’s judgment be so harsh towards people who did not listen to Him? Why did He send His son, Jesus Christ, to die. And further, what was the point of Jesus’ birth, life, torture, death, resurrection, and ascension? Why would Paul and other Apostles have to die if there was just one Heaven? What would their purpose on earth be?
Again, what would be the purpose of justice??
We are a people who love justice. We want to see the bad guy get punished so that something is done. So that the victims are not being walked all over. There is something you can do.
So where exactly did we get this idea of justice? Did it just pop into our minds because of our own intellectual ascension?
The answer is that God created this idea and desire for justice in us because justice is important to him! God is good and has allowed a certain amount of evil to infiltrate our society. Although God did not create bad it exists to try and overtake good. God created justice as His ultimate authority reigns forever.
Think about sports teams, disney movies, and real life. They all involve good and bad. Bad tries to overcome good but we all want the good to win. We love it when the underdogs win especially when everyone predicts that they have no chance. We know that the good teams or characters are designed to win because they are after all GOOD. We don’t want the bad to win because they are evil and are not living to love others. Think about the disney movies. We don’t want the evil witch to poison the beautiful princess and want to be able to warn the princess that she is in danger. Sometimes we want to scream through the tv to warn that princess so that evil does not win. Evidence of this good and evil is all around us.
It is the same principle when it comes to the afterlife. There is good and there is evil. The beautiful thing is that you have free will to choose whether you want an afterlife of good or an afterlife of evil.
Have comments? I’d love to hear them.
